Emma died tragically in a bus accident on Vancouver Island on September 13, 2019. She had just started her university life and was full of determination and excitement at the world that was opening before her. Emma spent most of her life as a student at Balmoral Hall School and in her senior years was an avid volunteer in Junior School.
In her memory, Balmoral Hall’s Class of 2019 Bursary Fund was renamed The Class of 2019 Emma Machado Memorial Fund, and a stained glass window made by faculty and staff has been installed near the third floor Senior School hangout.
A friendship bench, also known as a “buddy bench,″ constructed and donated by Seacor Jana, which is owned by the family of Natalie (Smith) Lekic ’02, has been placed in the front playground with these guidelines for use. With this rainbow-coloured bench, we honour Emma’s love of children and her care, advocacy, and service to all.
I remember that accident in the news last year as I live in the Lower Mainland, and thinking how awful the timing was for anybody to die or lose their family member. When I read this it brought it so close to home.
with sympathy to the family
