One of our most cherished seasonal traditions is Day of Giving, when BH girls spend hours volunteering throughout Winnipeg for hands-on experiences and combined efforts to make a difference. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to host or participate in any community events to mark the special day this year; nevertheless, the Balmoral Hall School community continues to embrace the spirit of giving.
“To our community, Day of Giving is much more than a habitual gesture of goodwill,” says Head of School Joanne Kamins, “as the spirit of giving stays with us year-round.”
Given a variety of opportunities this holiday season that may not have arisen in any other year — we’re delivering joy and hope in newfound ways, making them uniquely meaningful.
With Misericordia Health Centre Foundation unable to host their Angel Squad fundraiser in-person earlier this month, our staff organized a mufti day to help raise funds.
Next week, West Broadway Community Organization’s Good Food Club is hosting a Virtual Holiday Community Dinner Pizza Party, to which our staff contributed a collection of toppings.
“Balmoral Hall School has very generously participated in the spirit of giving by donating to a variety of local charities,” shares Principal of Junior School Judith Steek.
Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5 families supported Siloam Mission’s Share the Warmth campaign, which ends on December 18, contributing much-needed hygiene items and donations to the cause.
Adds Principal of Middle & Senior School Jodi Hafenbrak:
“For many of us, especially in times of stress, caring for others can be as transformative for us as it is for them. To lend someone a helping hand fosters kindness, empathy, and respect for one and all, and giving is proven to boost wellbeing. Now more than ever we can all benefit from acts of goodness.”
Though we were unable to visit Misericordia Health Centre this year, Middle School kept the tradition of creating gift bags for residents of the long-term care centre and the transitional floors of the hospital. Following safety protocols, Grade 6 to 8 homerooms wrote letters and designed cards earlier this month. On December 10, 2020, Middle School students and staff completed the rest of the gift bags while enjoying a festive and fun-filled afternoon.
Given citywide restrictions at the moment, each Grade 9 to 12 advisory group chose a cause to assist remotely — instead of volunteering for group activities as is customary for students and staff in Senior School on Day of Giving.
Organizations they were able to support this year include the following:
Be A Santa To A Senior
Mulvey School’s New Pajamas & New Book Drive
Siloam Mission – Knickers and Kickers
Mama Bear Clan Patrol
Koats for Kids
1 Just City
Thank you to staff, students, and parents for your generosity this holiday season!
